Life has been pretty tough for Goa and Thai since we got back from England. I am overwhelmed with work and have had no time for dog adventures, but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel known as the project-from-hell.
It is the start of a four day weekend in Spain, so I decided that half a day could be spent watching horses on the beach and with my dogs. Pretty much my favourite things in life, except for sailing.
This was the first outing in Goa and Thai’s new car and it is far more roomy and comfortable for them. They seem very pleased with it.
Zahara de los Atunes is a white village on the coast about 40 minutes from here. It used to be a fishing village, but has now become very gentrified. Little remains of the traditional way of life and the streets are lined with posh cars in front of trendy bars and fine-dining/fine-tapas restaurants. It is a popular summer holiday destination in summer for preppy/well-to-do/posh (choose your adjective) city-dwellers from all over Spain.
It organises two very successful tapas weekends featuring the locally caught bluefin tuna in spring and the local retinto beef later in the year. This weekend is the jazz festival, with horse-racing and polo on the beach.
Horse racing on the beach at Sanlúcar de Barrameda is a highlight of the summer season in Cadiz. But the crowds are impossible and the reason I have never gone.
So we set off to Zahara. We got there just about early enough to finding a parking place near the old castle and make our way to a good photo-taking spot on the beach. It is still unseasonably warm, but not too hot for Goa and Thai to be out and about. They enjoyed socialising with other dogs and people watching, and just being out of our garden for more than a short morning walk. Finally. They sensibly decided to ignore the horses.
Lunch in Santi Pectri overlooking the harbour and then back home. Very enjoyable day and two very exhausted dogs.
